Hello From Mombasa, Kenya

Sorry, it has been a while since my last post because many of the places we visited were repeats also ship life has been extremely busy and more fun than blogging.
I’m compelled to share with you the excitement of joining a small group of fellow travelers on a two-day African Safari and to tell you the absolute poverty we witnessed. Very few of us living in the western world would imagine the living conditions some Kenyan’s endure.

We stayed the night in a five star hotel with gorgeous grounds. The hotel architecture was unique……several silo like private rooms, each overlooking a watering hole where guests have a great view of visiting wildlife.

We left early in the morning and evening in two six seater Toyota vehicles and had a chance to observe and photograph the native wildlife. Zebras, Giraffes, Oryx, Wildebeests and gazelles as well as many exotic birds.

A good time was had by all, but that was tempered by the absolute poverty we witnessed to and from the our destination. There is one main road from the Mombasa port, used by heavy 20-wheel semi trucks instead of the 18 wheelers used in the western world. These tended to damage the pavement, hence the ride was rough at best. Truckers stayed and serviced their trucks in many shanty towns along the route, each occupied by very poor local residents who walked long distances to everywhere in the scorching heat.
